Foster Music Center Damaged After Recent Storm
Waxahachie, TX – April, 19, 2011 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Foster Music Center suffered structural damages from the severe thunderstorm that hit Waxahachie early Monday morning, April 11.
Ninety-mile-per-hour winds removed large portions of the building’s roof in the wake of the storm. SAGU’s maintenance staff informed administration of the damage at 3 a.m. while attempting to help prevent any further damage. Crews continue to clean up the site. The insurance company will not be able to make an assessment of the damage until the building has completely dried.
Classes were delayed until 11:30 a.m. while the Academic Services department discussed displacing the 30 classes that are normally scheduled to meet in the music building. When the university opened, Academic Services, the Office of the Registrar and Learning Centers personnel informed students and provided new class locations.
Two classrooms, a faculty office, 3 practice rooms, the band instrument storage closet and the Burke Choir Hall received major water damage. Newly purchased Boston pianos, a Roland keyboard and a wide selection of band and string instruments were destroyed. Other practice rooms containing 3 Steinway pianos and 5 Boston pianos will be assessed for any damages resulting from the building’s high humidity levels.
Music Department Chair Linda Robins states, "We have submitted a fair quote to the insurance company for the repair or replacement of all the damaged or destroyed instruments. We pray that the insurance will cover everything, but we have yet to hear anything. Thank you all for your prayers.”
SAGU will host several upcoming events like Gulf Latin Fine Arts, North Texas Fine Arts, Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders and North Texas Assemblies of God District Council that rely heavily upon the usage of the building. While Director of Business Services Jimmie Lamb hopes the reconstruction will be completed within the next few weeks, he notes, “The extent of the reconstruction will be contingent upon whether or not we will have to replace the soundproofed walls.”
