Waxahachie, Texas – July 15, 2014 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) Bible and church ministries professor Dr. Jeff Magruder spoke at the 43rd annual meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies (SPS) held March 6-8, 2014.

With more than 300 of the world’s leading Pentecostal and Charismatic scholars present at the event, Dr. Magruder presented "online alter calls" to the practical theology and spiritual formation interest group on March 6th at Evangel University in Springfield, Missouri. His presentation examined the practice of the altar call and explored its place in Pentecostal spirituality and this digital age. He explained how uploading and viewing videos of altar calls affects issues of perception, meaning-making and privacy.

SAGU Chair for the Department of Bible and Theology Dr. Bruce Rosdahl was present at the event and said, "In a media-saturated age, a discussion on the ethics of televised and online church services is desperately overdue." He continued, "Dr. Magruder's presentation at SPS reminded the audience that media shapes the message. Even beyond the important issues of perception and interpretation, consideration must be given not to exploit the vulnerable who have not given permission to be broadcasted."

The Society for Pentecostal Studies began in 1970 and is an organization of scholars providing a forum of discussion for all academic disciplines as a spiritual service to the kingdom of God. The purpose of the Society is to stimulate, encourage, recognize, and publicize the work of Pentecostal and Charismatic scholars and scholars of Pentecostalism; to study the implications of Pentecostal theology in relation to other academic disciplines, seeking a Pentecostal world-and-life view; and to support fully, to the extent appropriate for an academic society.

After graduating from SAGU with a bachelor's degree, Dr. Magruder received his Master of Divinity at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He then received his Doctor of Ministry at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminar where his doctoral advisor was Haddon Robinson. He is in demand as a speaker and has served as a pastor, youth pastor and interim pastor. He has presented papers at the Society of Pentecostal Studies and the Evangelical Homiletical Society. His articles on preaching have appeared in Preaching Magazine, Enrichment Journal and The Preachers College.

He also spoke at Global High School's annual Baccalaureate for the graduating seniors on June 1, 2014 at Waxahachie Bible Church. The event was a Christianity-based interdenominational service to celebrate the graduating class.
