Waxahachie's Brad Beimler signs with SAGU

Coach Covarrubias begins Running Lions program

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Fast as a starting pistol can be fired, Head Coach of Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s new Cross Country team, Jason Covarrubias, has signed his first recruit.

And the coach didn’t have to go far.

Waxahachie High School 2012 graduate, Brad Beimler, penned his signature to a binding National Letter of Intent to become the first Lion recruit to commit.

Beimler, who ran for the Indians’ Head Coach Steven Weeks, has the opportunity to help establish the newfangled sport on campus.

He comes across Main Street and along East University Avenue to wear the Purple and Gold this fall. But prior to college, he was a very productive runner in Green and White for Class 4A Waxahachie HS.

Beimler was awarded the Indians’ Runner of the Year trophy.

He turned in a 16:30.00 while running a 5K. During the District 15-4A meet he finished in fourth place.

Then, in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Regional meet, he placed 27th.

He showed his wares for the track team by turning in some impressive distance event times; in the 1,600 Meters (4:48.11) and in the 3,200 Meters (10:34.00).

“We are very excited about Brad coming on board,” quipped Coach Covarrubias. “His desire to compete has truly kept him focused during this year off from organized competition. He took a year off after graduating in 2012.”

“That drive will help him play a big role on this very young team,” the coach pointed out. “He can contribute from day one!”

Born in Waco, Beimler’s parents are Ronnie and Kellette Sprayberry. He has two siblings in Jackie Beimler (22) and Tyler Davis (16).

Like many students at SAGU, he is active in church. In fact, he is a worship leader and a student leader at his church’s youth ministry. He plans to be a Music major at Southwestern.

“We are thrilled to have a local lad show so much interest in SAGU and the starting of our cross country program,” Covarubbias said of Beimler.

The Lions will report for pre-season camp in August. They have four meets on the slate for the fall; a pair in September – both in Texas, and two more in October – in Oklahoma and the other in Kansas.

They will participate in the Sooner Athletic Conference meet in Shawnee, Ok on November 9.

SAGU can qualify for either the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national meet in Lawrence, Ks or the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) nationals at Cedarville, Ohio.
