Teaching Experience
Dr. Mapes is a professor and the Chairman of the Department of Counseling/Psychology at Southwestern Assemblies of God University. (SAGU) In addition to overseeing the Counseling/Psychology department he also teaches counseling and psychology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Dr. Mapes has taught courses in Bible, theology, sociology, counseling, and psychology at the college and university level.
Counseling and Mental Health Experience
Dr. Mapes served as the Director of a community Crisis Center providing crisis intervention services. He developed special programs to train paraprofessionals in crisis counseling, organized a daily support and assistance program to aging adults, developed a peer counseling support program for children, established support groups and gave crisis assistance to victims of family violence, and established a program for the distribution of food and emergency aid. His weekly newspaper column, “Crisis Lines” dealing with mental health issues, was published in several North Texas newspapers. Dr. Mapes has also served as the Director of Counseling and Placement at SAGU. Dr. Mapes established North Texas Counseling and Education Services, a community counseling service that provides individual, group, and marriage counseling. He currently serves as its administrative director and remains active in community counseling.
Ministry Experience
Dr. Mapes is an ordained minister, former pastor, and has several years of ministry experience. He has filled multiple roles in churches and ministry settings. He remains active in church ministry through teaching, preaching and presenting seminars.

Dr. Carmen holds many licenses, certifications, and memberships among the psychology community and the Christian community. He is a licensed Professional Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Texas. He is a member of the American Psychological Association and of the Texas State Board of Examiners of Licensed Professional Counselors, Examination Committee. In addition, Dr. Carmen has authored and/or coauthored four textbooks that stress Christian psychology. He is also an Ordained Minister with the Assemblies of God.

Professional Experience: 25 years in the mental health field. Licensed clinical psychologist. Licensed professional counselor. Served as Chief, Child and Adolescent Services in hospital psychiatry department. Served as Director of Clinical Services for an adolescent facility. Former Clinical Psychologist in the military. Served as Clinical Trainer for state agency over five years. Approved LPC Supervisor. Professor at SAGU since 2001. Dr. Armistead has many years of teaching, training, and clinical administrative and supervisory experience on the undergraduate, graduate and professional level prior to coming to SAGU. This has included teaching in both private and public university settings.

Thelisa is an alumni of Southwestern A/G University. She completed her Masters of Arts at the University of Houston-Clear Lake in Psychology. Thelisa is a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Texas. She recently completed her Ph.D. at Texas A&M University with a specialization in Adult Education. She has presented her research to the American Psychological Society and American Educational Research Association.
Thelisa was a professor in Behavioral Science for 9 years at North Harris Community College in Houston, TX. She was honored with the Teaching Excellence Award 1999-2000 at North Harris College. In addition, she was the National Mentor Program Manager for the Camden Corporation. Recently, she has teamed with the North Texas District to create the CounselCare Program. CounselCare provides professional counseling, pastoral care, and life coaching for ministers and their families.
Also, she is serving along side her husband, Rev. Stephen L. Nutt, Senior Pastor at Creekwood Church. Creekwood Church is a new church plant in Mansfield, Texas. She has a strong commitment to building strong families, Christian counseling, and the field of counseling/psychology.
