WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Ah, spring! When nature gets back up and fights! When hope adds some giddy-up to your step! When God shows what he can do with a drab and dirty world, said Virgil Kraft, a writer and minister. Mostly it is about newness, resurrection and fresh starts!
Greg Hayes, the head coach at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, who is in the early stages of the current college baseball season, has his eye set on future growth and development of the Lions team. He recently announced the addition of a new recruit, Jacob Spivey, who has signed his national letter of intent to play at SAGU.
"We are really excited about Jacob coming to Southwestern," Coach Hayes said this week. "He is an outstanding young man. We are glad we found him, but he had heard about SAGU from one of our current players, Chris Stanley."
Spivey played previously at Georgetown High School, which is north of Austin, Texas. He transferred to Harker Heights, a town just west of Temple. Stanley, a junior pitcher on the Lions and a former Harker Heights Knight, had spoken about Southwestern in hopes of encouraging Spivey to join the Purple Pride.
Spivey took the advice and made tracks to Waxahachie. Southwestern had two other graduates from GHS play this year; running back Dylan "the Diesel" Jensen (football) and forward Jirah Rodriguez (basketball).
Spivey is a 5-foot-10 current member of the Harker Heights H.S. team, where he is a shortstop for Coach Glenn Cunningham's team. As a junior he was a co-captain at Georgetown, where he swung a .501 bat! Known for speed, Spivey projects as a top-of-the-lineup style of hitter.
He is a stellar pitcher, holding opponents to a meager .220 batting average last season while sporting a 2.75 earned run average.
It is expected that he will compete for a middle infield job and a spot in the SAGU rotation.
