Credit By Examination

Southwestern awards undergraduate credit on the basis of nationally administered examinations, as well as examinations administered by academic departments on campus. Credit by examination is not awarded for course credit in any course for which the student has previously received a grade. A recording fee will be charged per credit hour. (See current fee schedule for amount.)

Students desiring to be awarded undergraduate credit based upon examination must take the examination at least one semester prior to the semester of their graduation. Students may not receive credit for courses which they have already attempted at SAGU or for which they have taken advanced courses in the same discipline. (Please see Undergraduate Catalog for full guidelines.)

Southwestern accepts credit for the subject examination of the nationally administered College Level Examination Program (CLEP).

Any student scoring 26 or higher on the Mathematics of Natural Science area, or 29 or higher on the English section of the America College Test (ACT) is eligible to receive up to three hours college credit for each score validated by the Registrar's Office.

Any student having a high proficiency in English may receive course credit (English 1113) for successfully completing the locally administered English Departmental Proficiency Examination (EDPE).

SAGU also accepts certain credits from the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and the Defense Activity for Nontraditional Educational Support (DANTES) program.  (Please see Undergraduate Catalog for full guidelines.)

Students are required to officially declare any CLEP, AP, IB, DANTES, or ACT credit within their first academic year. There is a also a maximum limit of 30 hours that may be attained.
