Waxahachie, Texas - April 23, 2014 - Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) alumna and current administrative assistant for the Harrison Graduate School Mary Beadles traveled to the Dominican Republic last November to teach rescued prostitutes how to support themselves through her sewing ministry.
In the spring of 2014, Mary decided to go with her husband and SAGU women's basketball coach Arlon Beadles and the women's Basketball team to the Dominican Republic for a mission’s trip. They went to the city of Juan Dolio and ministered to women rescued from prostitution with the Lily House. After ministering to these women, Mary’s desire was to find a way to help.
"I knew the women had a need," Beadles said. "I learned back in May that the leaders needed something for the women to do so that they can support themselves outside of the rescue mission. I told them that I could teach the women how to sew purses to sell and make uniforms for their children."
Beadles has been making her signature reversible purses for the past two years, and was able to sell them through her website called IYQPurses.com. She got the logo from a special needs nephew who can't pronounce “I Like You” correctly, and it sounds like IYQ, so that is her logo on the outside, and on the inside it says “IYQ2”.
"Through the sales of my purses, I was able to raise enough money for my airplane ticket, room and board," Beadles said. "Other funds that were given were especially for the women of Lily House it was used to buy over 60 yards of fabric, buttons, irons, and sewing needles for the women to use at the shelter. Now, the women have their own little boutique to sell the purses."
Director of Graduate Student Relations Dr. Dan Shong said, "I have worked with Mrs. Beadles for the past 9 years, and her character is to love God and serve others. The way she interacts with people emphasizes her servant's heart and how much she truly cares about them. This fed into her desire to go with her husband Coach Beadles and the women's basketball team to the Dominican Republic. She truly exemplifies who we are as a university."
Beadles is planning to retire from SAGU at the end of the Spring 2015 semester. She hopes that her work in the Dominican Republic with Lily House could become a long-term ministry opportunity and plans to bring others with her on mission’s trips to help teach the women in the future.
