Men’s cross country team qualifies for nationals
Summerfield, Texas- September 20, 2014- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) cross country team participated in their second meet of the season at the East Texas Invitational hosted by New Summerfield ISD. The men took care of business early in the season and already qualified for the National Christian Colleges Athletic Association’s (NCCAA) national meet.
The men participated in their first 8000m race. Freshman Gabriel Price led the Lions coming in 7th followed by Brad Beimler and newcomer and former SAGU soccer player Gerardo Nava. Captain Jose Campos and transfer Mylik Butcher rounded out SAGU’s top 5.

Coach Jason Covarrubias is thrilled about his trip back to the national meet, “These kids believe that hard work works and they proved it today. I’m extremely happy that we got this monkey off our back early in the season and now all we have to do is focus on shedding time!”
The women didn’t have enough to qualify for nationals but the ones that did compete finished strong. Captain Destiny Garza led the Lions and set a personal record and broke the school record with the time of 20:27. She was followed by freshman standout Kelly Cook and Cesia Garcia.
The NCCAA National Championship is scheduled for November 15, 2014 at Houghton, NY. In the first meet of the season Kelly Cook and Destiny Garza both qualified for the NCCAA national meet.
