Cross Country News

Abilene, Texas- September 7, 2014- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) men’s and women’s cross country teams competed in the Bill Libby Invitational hosted by McMurry University (Texas).  The Lions made progress on last year’s standings and had two runners qualify for nationals.

Freshman Kelly Cook finished 12th overall for the women coming in at 20:50.  Sophomore Destiny Garza came in 13th, right behind Cook with a time of 21:17.  Both Cook and Garza met the qualifying time for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Meet. 

“I’m impressed with the women and expect them to qualify as a team any week now.  The men were shorthanded but the runners we did have stepped up to fill the void,” said Coach Jason Covarrubias. 

Freshman Gabriel Price led the men’s squad.  Price placed 11th with a time of 22:20.  Sophomore Jose Campos finished PriceMcMurry2Freshman Gabriel Price running to the finish line14th coming in at 22:39. 

Both the men’s and women’s cross country Lions came in 4th at the Bill Libby Invitational. 

SAGU will participate in the East Texas Invitational in Summerfield, Texas on September 20, 2014.
