All-freshman squad fares well in Oklahoma

Jose Campos turns best time again for the Lions

cc-campos-joseSHAWNEE, Oklahoma  --  In just their second meet ever, the men’s Cross Country team from Southwestern Assemblies of God University improved upon their first.

They shortened the average members’ time from the McMurry University Invitational by an average of three-minutes.

As a group they finished ninth in a field of ten. There were veteran teams from the NCAA Division II and III as well as several NAIA units.

Oklahoma City University won the meet with a team time of 2:07:00.0, an average of 25:24 per runner.

East Central University (Ok) was second, followed by Rogers State University (Ok), St. Gregory’s University (Ok) and Oklahoma Baptist University, who hosted the meet.

The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith took sixth. Then came Oklahoma Christian University, Cowley College (Ks), SAGU and Texas Wesleyan University.

Head Coach Jason Covarrubias and the Lions combined for a time of 2:22:20.00 with team members completing the 8K run in 28:28.

The first-year Lions, who have earned a berth at the NCCAA Nationals in the Dayton suburb of Cedarville, Ohio, were led again by Jose L. Campos (Luling, Tx / Luling HS).

His time in the 8K was 27:41, which was the 44th best time. Only the top 95 harriers could earn points. Campos turned in a 27:44 at last month’s McMurry University meet in Abilene, Texas.

Then came a neck-and-neck finish for 48th between John B.J. Hillhouse (Brookshire, Tx / Royal HS) and Brad Beimler (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS). Hillhouse edged his teammate. Their times were 27:51 and 28:06.

It was the first college meet for Beimler, who had Reserve Duty the weekend of the McMurry Invitational.

Juan Rubio (Rockdale, Tx / Rockdale HS) came in 60th at 28:50, while Nathaniel Gonzales (Dilley, Tx / Dilley HS) was 72nd with a 29:52.cc logo 4

Christian Yglecias (Cameron, Tx / C.H. Yoe HS) placed as well. He was clocked at 30:01.30.

Luke Flattery (Springfield, Mo / Central HS) stopped the timer at 31:57.80.

The team, which is comprised of all-freshmen, has entered in competitions the next two weekends.

On Saturday, October 19, they are in the field at the University of Dallas Invitational in Irving Texas. It is located 38 miles northwest of Waxahachie.

Then, on October 16 in Winfield, Kansas, they are in the NAIA’s Mid-States Classic.
