XC recruit helped Luling HS win three state titles

Campos joins a growing Men's Cross Country roster

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  New Head Coach Jason Covarrubias has added another member to Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s first Men’s Cross Country team.

Jose L. Campos, Jr., from Luling High School, has signed a binding National Letter of Intent to join the team when they report for camp in August.

Luling is a Class 2A public school has won four state titles in Cross Country, including 1999, 2010, 2011 and 2012. In his freshman year the Eagles were in Class 3A, where they finished 10th at the state meet.

The Eagles have also won the crown in both boys and girls track.

Luling (pop. 5,467), home of the annual Watermelon Thump, is 58 miles east of San Antonio.

Campos has a glowing resume while donning the green and white threads for Luling Head Coach, Mike Barnett.

He was a four-time qualifier for the State XC meet as well as having earned a place on the Academic All-District team. He added All-Region Academic and All-State Academic three years running.

Campos made the grade as a First Team All-Region selection three times, and then garnered First Team All-State honors in each of those three seasons.

Individually, he was a regional runner-up on three occasions. Plus, his prowess in distance running helped Luling win the UIL Class 2A state championship during his sophomore, junior and senior years.

While wearing the winged heels for the Eagles’ track team, Campos twice qualified for the state meet in the 1600 meters and the 3200 meter runs. During those two years he also finished second in the 1600m and 3200m events.

As a sophomore and again as a senior he was a district champ in the 1600m and took first in the 3200m as a sophomore and as a junior.

He was as steady as a sentry at Buckingham Palace and as fluid as a pendulum throughout his prep career.

Some of his personal bests included a 15:54.4 in the 5K and a 9:38 in the 3000m. In track, Campos turned in a 4:29.3 in the 1600m and a 9:47 in the 3200m.

New SAGU Head Coach Jason Covarrubias, speaking about the recruiting process, admitted that “all coaches at this level really ever do is recruit athletes on potential. With most athletes, one can look at their high school accomplishments and project where they could be in a few years. But no one ever truly knows.”

“Then there are those athletes who you just know are leaps and bounds ahead of the pack,” he pointed out. “That is Jose Campos! This young man is the real deal!”

“We are looking forward to seeing Jose’s transition from a multi-year, multi-sport and most importantly academic All-State student-athlete into a possible NAIA and NCCAA All-American!”

SAGU will compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the 11-team Sooner Athletic Conference. Oklahoma Baptist University won the SAC championship on November 3. Wayland Baptist University was second.

OBU was ranked No. 4 in the NAIA at the end of the season, with two other SAC team making it into the Top 12.

The Lions are dual members in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), which has 125 member schools from the NAIA up through Division II in the NCAA. SAGU will compete in Division 1.

Oklahoma Christian University (NCAA D2) won the NCCAA’s D1 championship. Arlington Baptist College took the NCCAA D2 title under current SAGU Coach Covarrubias. The Patriots were national champs in their second year of existence.

Born in Austin, Texas, Campos hopes to study Physical Education or a Math related major. He finished in the Top 10 of his graduating class at Luling.

Alma Campos is Jose’s mother. He has a 12-year old sister in Alexandria.

He served at his home church in their Vacation Bible School, a community outreach to elementary age children. He was also active in their Wednesday night youth group services.
