Cross Country heads to Piney Woods
SAGU teams enter East Texas Invitational
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The second meet of the inaugural 2013 season for the Cross Country teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University is set for Saturday.
The East Texas Invitational, hosted by the New Summerfield Independent School District, has a course planned for the Piney Woods, 31 miles south of Tyler, Texas.
New Summerfield is near Jacksonville, deep in the coniferous forests filled with pine trees and hardwoods, including hickory and oak. Following heavy rains, the grounds will provide a challenge to the harriers. A paddle, mud shoes and a fishing rod could make the event more interesting.
SAGU Head Coach Jason Covarrubias reports his men's and women's teams should carry their entire rosters into the competition. He hopes to have the Lady Lions punch their ticket to the NCCAA Nationals in Dayton, Ohio.
"The Lady Lions have been looking forward to this meet for weeks," Coach Covarrubias said this week. They have their sights on meeting the NCCAA national qualifying team standards. The event will be held in November in Cedarville, east of Dayton.
Watch for Destiny Garza (Aldine, Tx / MacArthur HS) to have a good meet, along with teammates Kristen Herrington (Lufkin, Tx / Hudson HS) and Elizabeth Munoz (Granbury, Tx / Granbury HS). Herrington was the top performer at the team's debut in Abilene, Texas. Munoz will be competing in her first meet.
The men had very promising results in Abilene. Jose Campos (Luling, Tx / Luling HS) and B.J. Hillhouse (Brookshire, Tx / Royal HS) look to continue their successful freshman year.
Covarrubias believes they have a good chance to place in the Top Ten overall.
Brad Beimler (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) is anticipating his first collegiate competition.
Both SAGU teams' entire roster is posted on the SAGU Athletic website.
The men's 8K run begins at 8:00am on Saturday, followed by the start of the women's 5K at 8:30am.
The eight-team field includes the following schools; UT-Brownsville, UT-Tyler, Wiley College, LeTourneau University, Our Lady of the Lake University, LSU-Shreveport, Jarvis Christian College and SAGU.
