Cheerleader and Mascot Information
Would you like to become a member of our team? If you are a cheerleader or mascot, SAGU offers an excellent opportunity for you to continue your skills at the collegiate level.
The All-Girl cheer team promotes SAGU Spirit by performing at all home football games, volleyball games, and all home basketball games, and select road football games. They are also given the opportunity to travel to big tournaments. The All-Girl Cheerleaders are not a competitive team, however they do perform at special events throughout the year, including homecoming, Midnight Madness, University pep rallies, and community appearances.
The All-Girl Cheerleaders typically practice twice a week in the evenings.
To help ensure that our cheerleaders remain healthy mentally/physically as well as help prevent injuries, our squad lifts weights and works out twice a week in the Garrison Wellness Center.
All current and prospective SAGU students trying out for cheerleading are required to attend the tryouts on Friday evening. All those auditioning for the squad must present a completed Cheer application Beverly Robinson, Advisor.
Tryouts for Judah the Lion, are held at the same time as the cheer tryouts in the Claxton Gymnasium. Those trying out should prepare a two-three minute routine set to music and be prepared to perform the routine wearing a mascot costume. Judges will rate the applicant on how he/she entertains, whether he/she effectively portrays the mascot and on his/her ability to relate to and get a crowd involved in a game.
Basic Requirements for the All-Girl Cheer Team:
Application, Forms, a recent head shot, and Fees
Required to attend at least ONE Campus Days Event
Tumbling: HIGHLY suggested/optional tumbling pass
Stunts: Must be able to excel in two different positions (back spot, flier, main base, side base)
SAGU Fight Song/ 8 count (taught prior to auditions)
SAGU Chant (taught prior to auditions)
MUST have prior cheerleading and/or dance experience
The All Girl cheer team will consist of no more than 12 members and 2 alternate positions.
