SAGU Basketball Travels to Belize for Missions
SAGU Men’s Basketball traveled to Belize to end their school year with a missions trip. The 12-day trip spanned many clinics, students, testimonies, and four basketball games.
According to Clay Scarborough, “The ultimate success of the trip was achieved through the God-given talents of the athletes and the desire of the team to spread the Word of God.”
They spent the first day (May 9th) in Belize City, where the team made a guest appearance on the Integrity Radio Morning Talk Show, the only Christian radio station in the country. In addition, the team led a chapel service at the Assemblies of God Bible Institute. The team’s day continued with handing out Bibles and teaching basketball skills to children at Belize Elementary School. In the evening, the team played at the Belize Civic Center against the San Pedro Tiger Sharks, where the team shared testimonies during halftime.
Other activities included painting a church, visiting Mayan ruins, and teaching a clinic at Hope Assembly of God High School in Orange Walk Town.
The team spent a full day at San Pedro Catholic High School where they led a clinic with the high school team. Tuesday, May 15, the team returned to Belize City for an elementary clinic and an evening game with the University of Belize, during which the Lions shared testimonies.
After performing two more clinics, the team attended a youth rally at Trinity Assembly of God Church, where Coach Boone capped off the trip with a message for the youth. Player Matt Daniels said, “The trip brought me closer to what I need to be and opened my eyes to what I’m supposed to do – work with kids. I’m an education major. I want to teach and coach.”
SAGU Receives 2006-07 RRAC S portsmanship Award

SAGU received the 2006-2007 Red River Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award for the demeanor and conduct of its players and coaches during the last academic year. RRAC Athletic Directors voted SAGU as the top overall program in exhibiting sportsmanship. Special recognition was given to Wiley College (Texas) for its men’s teams while SAGU was honored again for its women’s teams.
The RRAC is in its ninth year as an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The RRAC Sportsmanship Award is given annually to the RRAC member institution that has best exhibited the qualities of sportsmanship including teamwork, fair play, respect for the game, and conduct in competition. The level of sportsmanship must be apparent across a number of sports, on and off the playing surface, and in the schools’ interaction with fellow member institutions.
“As an institution devoted to spiritual formation in the life of every student, it is particularly rewarding to see SAGU recognized as the top overall program in exhibiting sportsmanship,” commented President Bridges. “We are blessed to have athletic personnel devoted to seeing our varsity athletic programs contribute to and enhance the mission and purpose of this university.”
