Junior in High School

Preparing for College Timeline

Fall: August - November:

  • If you are eligible, begin taking Advanced Placement courses that will transfer into your college degree plan.

  • Narrow your degree and college choices to the top three.

  • Get to know the College Admissions Counselors who are handling your file. These Counselors have access to limitless information and scholarship opportunities, and knowing them will increase your chances of attending college for an affordable fee.

  • Contact the special interest groups at the colleges of your choice (i.e., athletic team, music department, etc.)

  • Schedule campus visits to your top three college choices, and be sure to meet with the coaches or directors of special interest groups you may participate in once you enter college.

  • Start researching scholarship and financial aid opportunities at the three colleges of your choice.

  • Visit www.fastweb.com for available scholarships.

  • Take your ACT for the first time (and not the last J !)

  • Don’t forget to seek out a part-time or volunteer job in the career field you are interested in. Deciding this now makes college life more exciting, less stressful, and more productive for you!

  • Attend A/G District Youth Council and Youth Events. Knowing your DYD and Youth Pastor may help you access District scholarships as well as specific opportunities at A/G Colleges.

Winter: December - February:

  • Keep thinking about narrowing your degree and college choices from the top three to your top choice.

  • Stay in contact with the College Admissions Counselors who are handling your file. These Counselors have access to limitless information and scholarship opportunities, and knowing them will increase your chances of attending college for an affordable fee.

  • Stay in contact the special interest groups at the college(s) of your choice (i.e., athletic team, music department, etc.).

  • If you haven’t already, schedule campus visits to the college(s) of your choice, and be sure to meet with the coaches or directors of special interest groups you may participate in once you enter college.

  • Contact and get to know the Financial Aid Counselors at the college(s) of your choice.

Summer: June - July:

  • Keep thinking about the career field you want to enter and attempt to narrow it down to your top choice.

  • Choose your top college choice and begin focusing your attention on applying and being accepted to that school.

  • Stay in contact with the College Admissions Counselors who are handling your file. These Counselors have access to limitless information and scholarship opportunities, and knowing them will increase your chances of attending college for an affordable fee.

  • Stay in contact the special interest groups at the college of your choice (i.e., athletic team, music department, etc.).

  • If you haven’t already, schedule campus visits to the college of your choice, and be sure to meet with the coaches or directors of special interest groups you may participate in once you enter college.

  • Stay in contact with the Financial Aid Counselors at the college of your choice.

  • Keep researching scholarship and financial aid opportunities at the college of your choice.

  • Save up summer work money for college! It is right around the corner!

  • Attend A/G District Youth Council, Summer Campus, and Youth Events. Knowing your District Youth Director (DYD) and Youth Pastor may help you access District scholarships as well as specific opportunities at A/G Colleges.

  • Participate in Fine Arts Competitions (these are excellent scholarship opportunities.

  • Go an AIM trip (yet another excellent scholarship opportunity).

  • Consider taking one or more CLEP tests to help alleviate your class load in college. (add CLEP link)
