Entrance Requirements

General Admission Requirements: (see Academic Catalog).

Departmental Placement Examinations. The Departmental Placement Examination is given to all incoming and transfer music students to determine theory competency. All incoming music students will enroll in MUS 1112 Basic Musicianship I. The placement exam will be given the first day of class. Students will be placed in the proper theory classes dependent upon the placement scores. If the exam indicates a weakness in rudimentary skills, the student will be required to complete MUS 1112 Basic Musicianship I and/or MUS 1122 Basic Musicianship II, before enrolling in MUS 1114 Music Theory I. Basic Musicianship will be for elective credit only. Students enrolled through the School of Distance Education will take the Departmental Placement Exam by appointment during SDE registration week.

The Voice Placement Assessment (VPA) and Piano Placement Assessment (PPA) will be administered by the applied music faculty during the first week of each semester. The VPA and PPA will ascertain whether the student should enroll in applied music or in Class Piano/Class Voice. Students who are advised to enroll in Class Piano/Class Voice must pass the VPA/PPA before they will be allowed to enroll in applied music.

The Music Department Handbook explains fully the policies and procedures to be followed in achieving the goals for the music major. The music student is expected to be knowledgeable of this handbook and is held accountable for the guidelines presented therein. Click here to view the Handbook.
