Position Description
Institutional Mission
The purpose of Southwestern Assemblies of God University is to prepare undergraduate and graduate students spiritually, academically, professionally, and cross culturally so as to successfully fill evangelistic, missionary and church ministry roles and to provide quality educational and professional Christian service wherever needed throughout the world.
The Senior Director of Accounting and Finance reports directly to the Vice President for Business and Finance and oversees general accounting, fiscal reporting functions, and financial services of the University.  The position is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of internal controls that will ensure the safeguard of the University’s assets and ensures that all financial reporting is prepared in compliance with all University financial policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).  The portfolio includes supervision of accounting personnel and requires close communication and interaction with University administration, faculty, staff, and the Board of Regents. 
The Senior Director of Accounting and Finance should hold at least a bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field from a regionally-accredited college or university.  Other qualifications include but are not limited to:
  • Certification as a current Certified Public Accountant (preferred);
  • Minimum of five years of accounting experience in higher education and/or not-for-profit business and understanding of not-for-profit accounting;
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departmental functions;
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and managerial skills;
  • Competence in utilization of accounting and budgeting software;
  • Comprehensive  knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting;
  • Prior experience in supervision of employees; 
  • Flexibility in modifying accounting procedures, as needed;
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the University’s mission;
  • Ability to adapt accounting processes to alternative educational delivery systems.   

Major Responsibilities

  • Supervise all personnel in the accounting department;
  • Establish, maintain, and monitor internal controls;
  • Prepare monthly internal management reports and other financial reports, as needed;
  • Assist the administration in the development and monitoring of the operating budget;
  • Coordinate and lead the annual external audit process and liaise with external auditors;
  • Serve as a resource and provide financial reports to the Board of Regents and its various committees, as needed;
  • Effectively communicate all critical financial matters to the Vice President for Business and Finance in a timely manner;
  • Serve as the liaison between the University and Southwestern Foundation;
  • Coordinate banking activities;
  • Monitor and control cash flow;
  • Monitor expenditures for all departments and construction projects;
  • Prepare pro forma statements, financial forecasts, and surveys, as requested;
  • Prepare or supervise the completion of annual reports (IPEDS, FISAP, Etc.) and all governmental reports;
  • Serve on assigned committees;
  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Staff personnel must be employed with the university for at least one year before applying for an open position.  Human Resources may consider an exception for the employee who has been employed for at least six months and is applying for a position that would be a promotion in level.

Salary Range:  Compensation is commensurate with education, certification, and experience
